What is Kosher?
Kosher is a term used for a Jewish law that observes certain types of foods people a part of this culture may eat and how they can prepare their cuisine. Kosher can be divided into three categories:
Meat
There are specific animals that may be eaten; including cows, sheep, lambs, and goats, as they all have cloven hooves and chew cud. Kosher law does not have a general rule regarding what bird may be consumed, but geese, ducks, chickens, and turkeys are considered Kosher.
Dairy
For dairy products to meet Kosher requirements, they must derive from an acceptable animal, such as cows or goats. There is one exception to this rule when it comes to cheese if it is made with rennet that comes from a Kosher approved animal.
Pareve
Pareve describes Kosher foods that are not prepared with meat or dairy. This includes eggs, fish that have fins and scales, as well as fruits and vegetables.
